Testicular self-examination is when you check your testicles for any abnormalities. It is important to know what is normal and what changes have occurred. Change does not indicate that it is cancer, but if the cancer is evaluated early, then there is a chance for a cure.
When To Perform Self Exam
- Boys can start the self exam during their teens.
- Do a self-exam each month as it only takes a few minutes.
- Start immediately after a hot bath or shower, when the scrotal skin is relaxed and the testes can be felt easily.
How to Perform Self Exam
- Do the self exam while standing.
- Look for any swelling in the scrotum.
- Gently feel the scrotal sac to find the testicle.
- Check each testicle one at a time by rolling it between your thumb and
- fingers of both your hands firmly and gently.
- Try to feel the whole surface.
Note: It is normal to find out that one testicle is slightly larger than the other. It is normal to feel a cord-like structure (called the epididymis) on the top and back of each testicle.
